In most EEA countries, a contractor will be required to hold a valid European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) which allows the registered holder of the card to access state-provided healthcare in all EEA countries on the same terms and conditions as the local population.

Presenting the EHIC entitles the registered holder of the card to treatment that may become necessary during his/her trip to the EU/EEA countries but does not allow the card holder to go abroad specifically to receive medical care.

It must be emphasised that the EHIC is not an alternative to travel insurance or medical insurance. It will not cover any private medical healthcare, repatriation to the home country nor lost or stolen property.
